Unofficial results of dispensary questions

Published: November 10, 2010

In the election last week, voters in certain parts of Colorado were asked to take a position on medical marijuana dispensaries. In 42 cities and counties in the state, voters were asked whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be allowed in their locality. Citizens in eight of these regions voted to allow the dispensaries. Citizens in 34 voted to prohibit them. For a list of cities and counties that voted to allow, or not prohibit, medical marijuana dispensaries, and for a list of cities and counties that voted to prohibit, or not allow, medical marijuana dispensaries, see below.

Although eight seems to be a small number to allow dispensaries, it is important to note that there are many other cities across the state, from Denver to Boulder to Colorado Springs, that already allow dispensaries. These votes were taken in cities where elected officials are interested in enacting bans on dispensaries, as state law requires that this issue be put to a vote of the people. In addition, these results do not change the current status of medical marijuana in Colorado. Residents in all parts of Colorado are still protected from arrest and prosecution for using medical marijuana with their doctor’s recommendation.

We would like to thank everyone who got out to vote for dispensaries, the local organizations on the ground who worked tirelessly to make dispensaries a reality in their town, and all of our supporters who advocated to their friends, family, and strangers about the importance of providing patients safe and reliable access to medical marijuana.
