Take Action

In 2009 and 2010, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano introduced legislation to legally tax and regulate marijuana for adults. Although those bills didn’t pass, voters will decide whether to pass Prop. 19 in November. Prop. 19 would make marijuana cultivation and possession legal and allow cities to regulate and tax sales.

If you would like to help support the effort to tax and regulate marijuana in California, please take three simple actions:

Register to vote. Election day is November 2, 2010.

* Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Topics of good letters in support of Prop. 19 and ending marijuana prohibition might include raising serious tax revenue for the state, eliminating incentives for criminals to grow environmentally harmful marijuana gardens on public land, or de-funding violent Mexican drug cartels. You can find effective arguments for taxing and regulating marijuana in our library. Let us know if your letter gets published by e-mailing Bob Capecchi at rcapecchi@mpp.org.

* Write your legislators in support of taxing and regulating marijuana statewide by using our simple online action center. Even if Prop. 19 passes, it would not set up a statewide regulation and taxation system for marijuana. Instead, it would authorize the state (and cities) to do so.
