Los Angeles: take action to oppose underhanded attack on medical marijuana

This Friday, August 7, the Los Angeles City Council will consider adopting a resolution supporting federal legislation that seeks to enhance penalties for sales or manufacture of Schedule I or II controlled substances (including marijuana) "combined with any candy product."

The legislation — S. 258, authored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) — makes no exception for edible medical marijuana products distributed to patients in states with compassionate use laws. The vague nature of S. 258 could even lead to enhanced federal penalties for caregivers who bake edible marijuana products, such as brownies or cookies, for an ailing loved one.

Please call or e-mail your city council member today and ask that they reject Janice Hahn's resolution supporting S. 258.

District and contact information for the city council can be found on their website. You can enter your street address in the field provided to find out which city council district you reside in. There is also a map of all 15 districts provided.

The resolution under consideration by the city council only mentions marijuana in passing and mostly focuses on meth and other harder drugs that have allegedly been flavored to appeal to minors. Please make sure that the council realizes that Senator Feinstein's legislation is so broad that it would affect thousands of legal medical marijuana patients and caregivers.

I hope you'll also consider attending the city council hearing in Van Nuys to speak out against this ill-crafted legislation and the local resolution supporting it.

Friday, August 7, 10:00 a.m.
Van Nuys City Hall

Please pass this message on to other Angelenos so that they too can take action. Thank you for supporting MPP and California's medical marijuana patients.
