Title:
Calif.: Committee to consider ban on dispensaries in L.A.; call your councilmember TODAY!
Message:
For L.A. city subscribers:
At 2:30 p.m. TODAY, May 29, the L.A. City Council's Planning and Land Use Management committee will take up the proposed bans of medical marijuana dispensaries in L.A. Call your councilmember TODAY in opposition of any proposal that would ban dispensaries, even the “gentle ban.”
There are two proposals that the committee will consider, neither of which should be supported. The first is what’s being called a “gentle ban.” The idea is to ban dispensaries but then use “prosecutorial discretion to abstain from any enforcement action against the limited number of dispensaries that do not violate a set of City Council imposed restrictions.” It’s not yet clear how the city will determine which providers remain in business.
The second proposal is an outright ban on dispensaries until the California Supreme Court rules on Pack v. City of Long Beach. This would leave patients without any safe access at least until the Court makes a decision, and there’s no telling when that will happen.
Los Angeles is the largest city in California, and its sick and suffering residents should not be banned out of safe access. Make sure that the city council knows that Angelinos prefer safe access to a ban.
