Random drug testing will be the norm now for Greenwood city employees, Mayor Kenneth Edwards said Friday.
"I think it sends the right message to children and to our employees: that we want to maintain a safe and drug-free workplace," Edwards said.
The cost will be $25 a test and will be performed by "a Greenwood boy," Joe Bridges of Occupational Health Solutions, Edwards said.
According to its Web site, employee assessor and occupational therapy provider Occupational Health Solutions has a clinic in Fort Smith and is headquartered in Conway.
Edwards said the city has a policy requiring an employee be drug-tested anytime an accident occurs involving a city vehicle or anytime there is property damage in excess of $200.
The drug test panel includes marijuana, cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine and opiates.
Edwards said it was his idea to implement the random tests. He said he consulted with Police Chief Keith Jackson, who has required drug tests in his department for some time, and with the other department heads.
The consensus, he said, was that it would be a good thing to institute it for all city employees.
