Title:

Medical marijuana employment discrimination bill hearing tomorrow

Message:

Also, save the dates for MPP medical marijuana forums: March 30 and 31!

H.B. 2541, a bill that would make it easier for employers to fire medical marijuana patients, has already passed the House, 56-3. Please e-mail your senator today in opposition to the bill. You can also show your support for patients’ rights by attending the committee hearing tomorrow. Please dress professionally.

What: H.B. 2541 Senate Commerce and Energy Committee hearing. If you are a seriously ill patient, briefly testify and describe how detrimental it would be if you lost your job for using your medicine.

When: Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 16 at 9:00 a.m.

Where: SHR 109, Arizona Capitol

H.B. 2541 could possibly allow an employer to fire a medical marijuana patient based on a report alleging workplace impairment from a colleague who is “believed to be reliable.” It also would seemingly allow termination based on a positive drug test, which contradicts Prop 203’s language explicitly protecting patients from termination without proof of workplace impairment or possession.

Also, MPP is hosting educational forums on Arizona’s medical marijuana law — in Tucson on March 30, and in Phoenix on March 31, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Please save the dates.

In other news, H.B. 2585, which would add confidential medical marijuana patient data to the prescription monitoring program, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee, 8-1, on March 7, after passing the House, 51-6. Please call to urge your senator to vote “no” on H.B. 2585.
