Understanding the Motivations for Recreational Marijuana Use Among Canadians

Geraint B. Osborne and Curtis Fogel. "Understanding the Motivations for Recreational Marijuana Use Among Adult Canadians," Substance Use and Misuse, 43, issue 3 (2008): 539-72.

Conducted by researchers from the University of Alberta, this ethnographic study of 41 adult Canadian marijuana users found that there is no such thing as a "typical marijuana user." The marijuana users in this study were generally middleclass, stable, and employed in a variety of occupations. They tended to use marijuana selectively and moderately, to enhance recreation, relaxation, and social activities.
