This position paper from the U.S.'s second largest physician group and largest medical specialty society calls upon the federal government to reschedule marijuana under federal law so as to permit medical use. It strongly supports protection from arrest for patients and physicians following state medical marijuana laws, and discusses potential drawbacks of Marinol, including psychoactive side effects that are "more severe" than whole marijuana.
