National Drug Threat Assessment 2006
National Drug Intelligence Center, "National Drug Threat Assessment 2006," U.S. Department of Justice (National Drug Intelligence Center, January 2006).
This annual report from the U.S. Department of Justice, compiled from information supplied by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, is -- albeit unintentionally -- a critique of the government's war on marijuana and its priorities in the overall war on drugs. Some highlights: Methamphetamine was identified as the biggest drug threat by more than three times as many law enforcement agencies as considered marijuana the most serious threat. "The amount of marijuana available to domestic drug markets appears to be increasing slightly." This occurred despite a reported all-time record eradication of over 4 million marijuana plants the previous year, plus seizure of about 1,100 tons of marijuana at the borders. The report confirms that current laws have given criminal gangs a virtual monopoly on marijuana distribution, noting that Mexican and Asian criminal groups control most wholesale marijuana distribution throughout the United States.
