National Drug Threat Assessment 2007
National Drug Intelligence Center, "National Drug Threat Assessment 2007," U.S. Department of Justice (National Drug Intelligence Center, October 2006).
As with other years' editions, the 2007 version of this annual U.S. Department of Justice report, compiled from information supplied by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, unintentionally documents the failure of the government's war on marijuana. Some highlights: Despite aggressive "eradication" campaigns, marijuana remains widely available, and higher-potency marijuana is becoming more prevalent, with more of it being produced domestically; the capability of drug trafficking organizations to produce high-quality marijuana is expected to increase; marijuana distribution by Asian criminal gangs and smuggling of marijuana into the U.S. from Canada is increasing. And once again, in no region of the U.S. did local law enforcement officials consider marijuana to be the greatest local drug threat.
