Decreased Respiratory Symptoms in Cannabis Users Who Vaporize

Mitch Earleywine and Sara Smucker Barnwell, “Decreased Respiratory Symptoms in Cannabis Users Who Vaporize,” Harm Reduction Journal 4 (April 16, 2007).

Vaporizers heat marijuana enough to release cannabinoid vapors, but avoids combustion and the accompanying particulates, toxic chemicals and tar of smoke. This study found that self-reported symptoms of respiratory symptoms were reduced in those who vaporize compared with those who smoke marijuana. The improved respiratory outcome held true after adjustment for tobacco use and age, and showed a dose-response improvement with heavier marijuana use. Vaporizers appear to be a viable tool to reduce health harm from smoking marijuana.
