Phil has lived with HIV/AIDS for the past 13 years. Some of the worst symptoms of his illness have included wasting syndrome and neuropathic pain. In addition to the suffering caused by acute chronic nerve pain, Phil has difficulty absorbing nutrients (while his body simultaneously sheds fat). He swears by the effectiveness of medical marijuana and its therapeutic properties. Phil has gained 17 pounds while using medical marijuana, bringing his weight to a healthy level after losing more than 25 pounds during a particularly difficult period.
