NH House Committee to Consider Medical Marijuana Bill Monday


CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE — The New Hampshire House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee will hold a hearing Monday to consider a bill that would allow seriously ill patients to use medical marijuana if their doctor recommends it without fear of arrest.

    A 2008 Mason-Dixon poll showed that 71 percent of New Hampshire voters support such a law, including the majority of Democrats, Republicans and Independents.

                - WHAT: House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee hearing on HB 648, sponsored by Rep. Evalyn Merrick (D-Lancaster) and co-sponsored by Reps. Trinka Russell (D-Stratham), Tom Donovan (D-Claremont), Dr. James Pilliod (R-Belmont), Don Petterson (D-Brentwood), and Sens. Martha Fuller Clark (D-Concord) and John Gallus (R-Berlin)

                - WHO: Those scheduled to testify in favor of the bill include:
                                o    Dr. Joe McSherry, a Burlington, Vt., neurologist; Connecticut Rep. Penny Bacchiocci (R-Sommers); Matt Simon, executive director of New Hampshire Coalition for Common Sense Marijuana Policy

                                o    Patients: Clayton Holton (muscular dystrophy, Somersworth), Sandra Drew (multiple sclerosis, Allenstown), Ellen McClung (multiple sclerosis, Gilford), Barbara Filleul (cancer survivor, Concord), Scott Turner (degenerative disc and joint disease, Nashua)
