Medical Marijuana Benefit - New York 2008
Attended by more than 250 people of all ages, ranging from medical professionals, to MPP members, to patient advocates, MPP's medical marijuana benefit at the Highline Ballroom on May 14, 2008 was a huge success.
Former TV talk show host Montel Williams gave an impassioned speech about his multiple sclerosis and exhorted those in attendance to be more vocal and courageous in support of reform -- a point underscored in honoree Joel Peacock's story of the surprising sources of support he received when he went public about his experience with medical marijuana.
A staffer of honoree state Sen. Joseph L. Bruno (R-Brunswick) expressed Sen. Bruno's support for a medical marijuana law in New York, as well as his pleasure in receiving an award from MPP. Former host of MTV News Kurt Loder shared stories of several victims of the war on medical marijuana patients. And at the end of the night, Nicole Atkins & The Sea played upbeat music followed by a DJ set featuring Andrew VanWyngarden, one of the members of independent pop band MGMT.
