Welcome to MPP's Federal Action Center

  • "Legislators estimate that 10 letters from constituents represent the concerns of 10,000 citizens. Anybody who will take the time to write is voicing the fears and desires of thousands more."
     — former Congressman Billy Evans (D-Ga.)

Current Action Items

Each of these action items relate to a piece of legislation or issue being discussed in the U.S. Congress right now.  Please use the links below to use MPP's quick and easy online system to send an e-mail to your members of Congress on each of these issues. Constituent input makes an enormous difference, and it will only take you a minute.

DEA raids on patients, caregivers, and providers have been intensifying in several California counties and in Oregon. The raids have been mostly aimed at medical marijuana dispensaries operating legally under state and local laws. It’s time to stop the madness. Please use this site to urge your member of Congress to act against the DEA’s refusal to accept state and local medical marijuana regulation.

In a highly politicized and hypocritical move, the Drug Enforcement Administration has attempted to bury Professor Lyle Craker’s application for a license to produce research-grade marijuana for FDA- and DEA-approved clinical studies of medical marijuana at the University of Massachusetts. Please use this site to contact your member of Congress and help us gather signatures for Rep. John Oliver and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher’s letter to the DEA.

Join MPP’s ongoing campaign to fight funding for the White House drug czar's wasteful, misleading, and ineffective anti-marijuana campaigns. Please urge Congress to cut funding for the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Past Action Items

H.R. 5843: the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008

H.R. 5843 would have removed criminal penalties for possession of up to 100 grams of marijuana and the not-for-profit transfer of one ounce (28.3 grams) of marijuana.

H.R. 5842: the Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act

H.R. 5842 would have ended marijuana's classification as a Schedule I drug and would have allowed states to determine their own medical marijuana policies without federal interference.

Opponents Threaten to Make the D.C. Medical Marijuana Ban Permanent

Since 2001, Congress has prohibited Washington, D.C. from changing the penalties associated with marijuana possession or use - thwarting the will of 70% of D.C. voters, who in 1998 passed a ballot initiative to provide safe and legal access to medical marijuana for seriously ill patients. In 2008, opponents attempted to make this ban on medical marijuana in D.C. permanent.
